Five ways to roof a terrace
- Wooden pergola with polycarbonate. Warm appearance, reasonable budget, protects against rain. Requires coating.
- Aluminium pergola with a fixed roof Made of glass or polycarbonate. Maintenance-free, concealed water drainage, ready for blinds and glazing.
- Bioclimatic pergola with rotating slats. Rain outside, shade and light at your command.
- Retractable roof with roof segments that slide in. Over a pool or terrace where you want it completely open in summer.
- Awning as an addition or temporary solution. Shade yes, rain and wind limited.
Three things matter: which way the terrace faces, how often you sit there in the rain, and whether you want to enclose it at some point.
Terrace facing south, west or north
South terrace needs more shade than just a roof. Clear glass will create a greenhouse effect; choose tinted glass, opal polycarbonate or slats. West terrace If affected by low evening sun, a side screen roller blind will help. North and east terrace It supports clear glass that lets every ray of light through and benefits from an infrared heater.
Glazing of terraces and pergolas
Side glazing turns the pergola into a windbreak usable from March to November. Frameless sliding walls slide into a stack at the post and disappear in summer. Framed systems with double glazing provide better insulation and are a step towards winter gardenWe plan for glazing of the pergola already during the design of the structure; it can be added later, but it costs more.

Connection to the house and water drainage
Roofing attached to the house must direct water away from the façade and plinth. We use a wall profile with a sealing strip and a gutter with a downpipe connected to the existing rainwater drainage or to a rainwater tank. On insulated façades, we anchor using distance anchors into the load-bearing masonry to prevent damage to the insulation.
What affects the price of a terrace roof
Area, construction and roof materials, whether it is anchored to the house and how many extras you want immediately. The cheapest option is wood with cellular polycarbonate; the most expensive is a bioclimatic pergola with glazing. We will prepare an itemised quotation after a free survey so you can see what can be postponed for later.
